The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Sets Woody and Buzz Versus a Tablet Computer

It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping fans wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser avoids is what the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
