Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
