The winter recruitment period is always a period of intense rumour and possible major transfers. Several prominent players are being connected to moves away from their current clubs. Here is a look at some of the key figures that could be on the move in January.

Antoine Semenyo

Despite Ghana's inability to reach the AFCON, this has kept the forward available, indications are a significant transfer is imminent. This 25-year-old has a contract featuring a sizeable release clause active for a brief period in early January. Latest reports point to the Premier League champions look to have won the race for his signature. Other suitors such as Tottenham and Chelsea are said to have turned their attention to alternative targets, leaving clubs like Manchester United or Liverpool to attempt a last-minute bid.

M. Guéhi

This England defender has continued to impress for Crystal Palace despite a previous move to Liverpool collapsing. With his deal due to expire in the close season, this represents the club's last opportunity to secure a fee for their skipper. Numerous top sides, including Manchester City and multiple European giants including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, reportedly hold an interest. Yet, a winter departure is considered difficult, particularly given the manager's reliance on the defender.

Brennan Johnson

The Wales forward has found first-team opportunities limited at Spurs this campaign. Despite finishing as the side's top scorer the previous campaign, Johnson has begun just a small number of league games. Reports suggest the North London outfit is open to a transfer for the right valuation, thought to be in the region of forty million pounds. Bournemouth are currently leading the chase, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford also showing an interest.

Rúben Neves

This Portuguese playmaker could be set for a comeback to the Premier League after a spell in Saudi Arabia. Now only 28, while his agreement ending in the summer, he represents a possible bargain. Teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked with the former Wolves man. Furthermore, there are suggestions from Spain that he would be prepared to take a reduced salary for a move to the Spanish giants.

Marc-André ter Stegen

The veteran German goalkeeper is now as third-choice at Barça under the manager Flick. Having fallen out of favour and had an operation, a January exit seems highly probable. Villa were initially linked as a potential suitor, but that option currently seems unlikely. Instead, interest from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly showing curiosity in the 33-year-old.

I. Toney

The prolific English striker has continued finding the net frequently in the Middle East. Coming back to the Premier League might enhance his dwindling chances of being in the national World Cup. But, securing a deal presents significant challenges. Al-Ahli do not wish to sell him, and his reported enormous salary render any move complicated. This highly-rated Turkish forward has been in excellent form for the Italian giants this season. As his current contract nearing its end, a host of Premier League clubs – such as Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool – are monitoring the situation. Juventus are eager to tie down the youngster to a new long-term contract but are in a battle to retain one of the continent's most promising young talents.

K. Smit

This highly-touted Dutch midfielder has earned parallels to a Belgian superstar for his playing style. After impressing at the U19 Euros, he has broken into the AZ Alkmaar first team. This 19-year-old is heavily expected to complete a major move this month. Newcastle are believed to be frontrunners, but are facing strong competition from Real Madrid for a signing valued at approximately twenty-two million pounds.
