The UK and US have announced a significant bilateral deal that will keep zero tariffs on British medicine shipments going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to boost spending on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment secures that import taxes on these crucial exports will remain at nothing for a timeframe of the next three years.

This agreement follows earlier statements to hike duties on branded drug imports, with figures mentioned reaching double the cost.

"This arrangement with the United Kingdom bolsters the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue equity to U.S.–U.K. medicine commerce," a release noted.

Commercial Impact

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the UK's biggest exports to the America, which is easily the primary market for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data show that in the 12 months leading up to last September, the UK shipped drugs totaling £11.1bn to the US. This figure made up a significant portion of all goods exports in that period.

"This agreement protects work, increases investment and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a international leader for medical research," a government official commented.

Key NHS Changes

The deal includes several key pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it considers new medicines to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to double total NHS spending on medicines from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount pharmaceutical firms must pay back to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. Last year, rebates exceeded twenty percent.

Broader Context

The deal follows a long-running row between the sector and the British authorities over spending levels and regulatory access.

This friction were intensified by claims that American consumers were charged a premium for the equivalent treatments than patients in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while substantial investments have been pledged toward American operations.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its overall budget over the last ten years.
